At least 10 people have been killed in a brutal attack on Ruwi village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State. The tragic incident occurred around 10 pm on Thursday night when gunmen stormed the community and opened fire on mourners attending a wake.
According to sources from the community, the attackers unleashed sporadic gunfire on innocent citizens who had gathered to mourn the death of a loved one. Several others sustained varying degrees of injuries during the assault.
In response to the incident, the Plateau State Police Command, through a statement issued by DSP Alfred Alabo, the Police Public Relations Officer, expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased and the entire people of Plateau State. The statement, signed on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, revealed that the command received a distress report at about 9:20 pm, indicating that unknown armed assailants had invaded the village.
Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police immediately directed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bokkos Division to mobilize officers to the scene for rapid intervention. Additionally, extra manpower and operational assets from the State Headquarters were deployed to Bokkos and neighboring communities to prevent further escalation.
To ensure robust security measures, the Area Commander of Pankshin was instructed to relocate his base to Bokkos for closer supervision of operations. The Commissioner of Police also visited the crime scene to assess the situation and personally console the bereaved families.
Reaffirming the command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, CP Adesina assured residents that efforts are underway to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice. He urged community members to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the Plateau State Government has condemned the heinous attack in strong terms. In a statement signed by Hon. Joyce Ramnap, Commissioner for Information and Communication, the government expressed profound sorrow over the loss of innocent lives and reiterated its commitment to maintaining peace and security in the state.
Authorities have appealed to the public to provide credible information that could assist law enforcement agencies in apprehending those responsible for the massacre.
