A yet-to-be-identified woman who plunged into the Lagos Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge was recovered dead on Thursday.

The incident, which occurred around 4 p.m. near the University of Lagos (UNILAG) waterfront, drew swift response from marine police officers stationed in the area. Despite their rescue efforts, the woman was pronounced dead upon arrival at the university’s medical facility.

Confirming the development, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, stated that the deceased’s body has been transferred to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.

“Today, March 13, 2025, at about 1600 hours, an unidentified woman reportedly jumped from the Third Mainland Bridge into the water near the UNILAG waterfront at approximately 1500 hours. She was recovered at the University of Lagos shore slipway by a team of marine police officers stationed in the area. Despite their efforts, she was confirmed dead by a team of UNILAG medical doctors in the presence of officers from the Sabo Police Division,” Hundeyin said.

While the circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, eyewitnesses at the scene suspect suicide as the likely cause. Authorities have yet to determine the immediate or remote factors leading to the tragic event.
