On Sunday, June 18, 2023, at about 6 am, a submersible vessel with pilot Stockton Rush, the CEO of the OceanGates Expedition, the company leading the expedition, a British adventurer, Hamish Harding, two members of a Pakistani business family, Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleiman, and a Titanic expert went under the North Atlantic Ocean to investigate the Titanic crash.

This vessel was loaded with 4 days worth of oxygen and was set up to use two communication systems: text messages and safety pings that are emitted by the vessel every 15 minutes. But regardless of the safety measures that were put in place, these systems stopped working about an hour and 45 minutes after the vessel went underwater.

The search for the missing vessel which started on Sunday night has attracted international attention with people offering their prayers for the safe return of all the people aboard the vessel.

CBS News journalist, David Pogue, said the vessel had seven backup systems to return to the surface, even if all of them were unconscious. These include sandbags, inflatable balloons, and lead pipes. So the fact that none of them had worked yet was “devastatingly hopeless.”

While underwater noises have been detected by Canadian military surveillance aircraft early today, there is still no positive news yet as the search for the missing vessels stretches on.
