President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday visited survivors of the recent deadly attack in Yelwata community, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed.
Touching down at the Tactical Air Command of the Nigerian Air Force Base in Makurdi around 12:58 p.m., the President headed straight to the hospital to sympathize with victims receiving treatment.
The visit comes in the wake of a brutal assault last Friday, during which armed assailants stormed Yelwata at dawn. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers divided into three groups, entering the community from multiple angles and opening fire in coordinated turns—overwhelming local security efforts and sowing panic.
Following his stop at the hospital, President Tinubu proceeded to the new Banquet Hall of the Benue State Government House, where he met with key stakeholders to discuss the security challenges facing the state and chart a path forward.
In honor of the President’s visit and as a sign of mourning, the Benue State Government declared a public holiday.
The attack, one of the deadliest in recent times, has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for urgent and lasting solutions to the persistent violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt.
