President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Armed Forces to intensify efforts in tackling the country’s multifaceted security challenges, stressing the importance of a well-equipped military in preserving both national security and democratic governance.
Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu made the call during the induction ceremony of newly acquired Augusta A-109s Trekker helicopters into the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fleet. The event, held at the Presidential Air Fleet premises on Friday, coincided with the Air Force’s 61st anniversary.
“A democratically stable Nigeria is fundamental to our national progress and regional peace. The defense of democracy requires a military that is well-prepared, well-trained, and well-equipped,” Tinubu stated.
Highlighting the significance of the new aircraft, Shettima noted that the Augusta 109s are expected to play a pivotal role in combating terrorism, armed banditry, oil theft, and other security threats across the country.
“This induction is not just about adding new helicopters to our fleet; it is a strategic statement of intent—a demonstration of our collective resolve to strengthen our armed forces, defend our nation, and reinforce Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa,” he added.
The Vice President emphasized that despite economic constraints, the federal government remains committed to equipping the military and professionalizing its operations. He also urged for sustained regional cooperation, citing multinational efforts in the Lake Chad Basin as a model worth replicating.
Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Bala Hasan Abubakar, hailed the induction as a critical boost to the Air Force’s operational readiness, announcing that the NAF has received nine brand-new aircraft since 2024. These include four C-129 attack helicopters, three King Air 360s, and the two Augusta A-109s.
Abubakar revealed that an additional 49 aircraft are expected within the next two years, comprising:
10 Augusta A-109 Trekker helicopters
12 AH-1 Zulu attack helicopters
24 M-346 ground attack aircraft
3 Kata 295 medium airlift aircraft
“These acquisitions will significantly enhance the NAF’s precision strike, ground attack, and air mobility capabilities in our counterterrorism and counterinsurgency operations,” he stated.
He also noted ongoing investments in training and research, including the deployment of air and ground crews for overseas specialized training and breakthroughs in local defense technology development.
Initiatives such as the revalidation of Alpha Jet ejection seats, retrofitting of 68mm rockets, and development of pyro cartridge test kits signal the NAF’s shift toward self-reliance. A committee has also been inaugurated to begin local production of C-57mm rockets.
Air Marshal Abubakar thanked President Tinubu for his consistent support and praised Leonardo of Italy for the timely delivery of the helicopters. He assured that the new assets will be effectively deployed to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
“This is a new chapter for the Nigerian Air Force, and we remain committed to defending the nation with courage, innovation, and professionalism,” he concluded.
