President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially sworn in Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state.
The swearing-in ceremony, held on Wednesday at the State House in Abuja, was attended by key government officials, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi.
President Tinubu’s decision to impose emergency rule in Rivers State, announced on Tuesday night, led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.
As part of the emergency measures, Vice Admiral Ibas has been appointed to oversee the state’s affairs until normal governance is restored.
Ibas, a retired naval officer, previously served as Nigeria’s Chief of Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021 under former President Muhammadu Buhari. His appointment signals the federal government’s intent to stabilize the state’s political landscape amid ongoing tensions.
