President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major shakeup in the leadership of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), sacking Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Mele Kyari and appointing Engr. Bashir Bayo Ojulari as the new GCEO. In addition, Ahmadu Musa Kida has been named as the non-executive chairman.

The President also dissolved the NNPCL board members who were appointed alongside Kyari and Senator Ayo Akinyelure in November 2023. In a move to strengthen the company’s financial management, Adedapo Segun, who succeeded Umaru Isa Ajiya as Chief Financial Officer last November, has been appointed to the new board.

The restructured board now includes six non-executive directors representing the country’s geopolitical zones. Bello Rabiu will represent the North West, Yusuf Usman the North East, and Babs Omotowa, former Managing Director of the Nigerian Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG), the North Central.

The South-South zone will be represented by Austin Avuru, while David Ige will represent the South West, and Henry Obih will represent the South East.

Mrs. Lydia Shehu Jafiya, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Finance, will serve as the ministry’s representative on the board, while Aminu Said Ahmed will represent the Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

This comprehensive overhaul underscores President Tinubu’s commitment to revitalizing NNPCL and ensuring strategic leadership in the nation’s oil and gas sector.
