Former federal lawmaker, Shehu Sani, has criticized the National Population Commission (NPC) for requesting nearly ₦1 trillion to conduct the 2024 national population and housing census, describing the demand as excessive.
Reports indicate that President Bola Tinubu rejected the proposed ₦942 billion budget, instead considering the deployment of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members for the exercise.
Reacting to the development, Sani commended the president’s decision, stating on his verified X handle:
“The National Population Commission’s request for almost a trillion naira just to count Nigerians is total madness. The rejection of their budget is commendable.”
The decision has sparked discussions on cost-effective alternatives for conducting the census amid Nigeria’s economic challenges.
