PORT HARCOURT — The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd.), has formally handed over power to the reinstated Governor Siminalayi Fubara, marking the end of six months of emergency rule in the state.
In his final state-wide broadcast on Monday, Ibas expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and urged Rivers people to rally behind Fubara as he resumes his duties.
“My dear citizens of Rivers State, it’s with gratitude in my heart and humility in my spirit that I address you today for the final time as administrator of our beloved state,” Ibas said.
He recalled being appointed by President Bola Tinubu to steer the state through what he described as “an extraordinary moment in its history,” following the president’s suspension of Fubara and declaration of emergency rule six months ago.
Highlighting his stewardship, Ibas listed key achievements including the restoration of law and order, conduct of local government elections, reconstitution of statutory boards and commissions, and passage of the state budget by the National Assembly.
“These are milestones of progress that belong to all of us and reflect the resilience of the people determined never to let their state slip into paralysis,” he noted.
Offering words of caution, he stressed: “One of the enduring lessons of this season is that the exercise of power without restraint can cripple institutions, and rivalry without dialogue clearly endangers democracy.”
As he bowed out, Ibas described his service as a chapter devoted to governance after years at sea and in diplomacy. He called on the people of Rivers to give Fubara their full support.
“No matter how competent and clear a vision may be, it can only thrive with the active support of citizens. Now as I hand back the reins of leadership to Sim Fubara, I do so with confidence and respect,” he concluded.
