TOKYO — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Japan for the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), set to begin on Wednesday, August 20, in Yokohama.
The President touched down at Haneda International Airport in Tokyo at about 12:55 a.m. local time on Tuesday and was warmly received by Ambassador Hideo Matsubara, Japan’s Ambassador in Charge of TICAD, alongside Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar.
This year’s conference, themed “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa,” will run from August 20 to 22, focusing on accelerating Africa’s economic transformation through innovation, private investment, and institutional strengthening.
President Tinubu is scheduled to participate in plenary sessions, hold bilateral meetings with world leaders, and engage top Japanese business executives — including firms already investing or exploring opportunities in Nigeria.
Launched in 1993 by the Japanese government, TICAD is co-hosted by the United Nations, UNDP, the African Union Commission, and the World Bank. The summit is held every three years, alternating between Japan and African host nations.
After TICAD9, President Tinubu will proceed to Brazil for a state visit from August 24 to 25 at the invitation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. In Brazil, his engagements will feature bilateral talks, a Nigeria–Brazil Business Forum, and the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding to strengthen economic cooperation.
