Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has revealed a private conversation he had with the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, in which Buhari expressed admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s courage in removing the controversial fuel subsidy.
Speaking to journalists in Daura on the sidelines of Buhari’s burial, Governor Radda recounted the former President’s remarks, describing Tinubu as “a brave man” for taking a bold economic decision that Buhari himself had struggled to implement during his tenure.
“Let me use his words: ‘I pity Bola (President Tinubu) for what he is doing. He is a brave man for removing the fuel subsidy,’” Radda quoted Buhari as saying.
He added: “When I was president, whenever I made an attempt to remove the subsidy, a lot of people would give me too many reasons not to do so. But Bola did it immediately. If he had consulted people, he could not have removed the fuel subsidy now.”
Buhari, who died on Sunday at a clinic in London at the age of 82, was laid to rest on Tuesday in his hometown of Daura with full military honours.
Governor Radda also paid tribute to the late leader, noting that his death had left behind a vacuum that would be difficult to fill in the political and leadership landscape of Nigeria.
