Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a one-year extension of the tenure of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, whose initial term was set to expire on August 31, 2025.
The announcement was made on Thursday through a statement signed by Presidential Spokesman, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the Presidency, the extension will enable Mr. Adeniyi to consolidate ongoing institutional reforms and ensure the completion of key strategic initiatives already underway within the Customs Service.
“These reforms include the comprehensive modernisation of the Nigeria Customs Service, the implementation of the National Single Window Project, and the fulfilment of Nigeria’s commitments under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” the statement noted.
President Tinubu lauded the Customs boss for his “steadfast leadership and commitment to service,” expressing confidence that the additional year would further empower the agency to fulfil its core mandate of facilitating trade, boosting revenue, and enhancing national border security.
Adeniyi, a seasoned customs officer, was first appointed as Comptroller-General in June 2023. Since then, he has spearheaded several reform-oriented measures aimed at repositioning the Customs Service as a more efficient and transparent institution.
The extension comes amid broader efforts by the Tinubu administration to drive institutional efficiency and economic competitiveness through strategic reforms in key public service agencies.
