Tinubu Defends Rivers State Emergency

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the necessity of declaring a state of emergency in Rivers State, stating that the political crisis had reached a dangerous tipping point, threatening vital oil and gas infrastructure and undermining Nigeria’s economic stability.

Tinubu, in a statement on Thursday, praised the National Assembly for ratifying the emergency proclamation, describing it as a crucial step toward restoring stability in the state. He emphasized that the prolonged political turmoil, which had paralyzed governance for over 15 months, posed significant risks to the national economy and the progress of his administration’s reforms.

“The crisis in Rivers State was at a perilous tipping point, threatening the security of vital oil and gas installations and undermining the national economy,” Tinubu said.

“The near-total collapse of governance, threats to federal economic assets, and the risk of widespread violence left no room for hesitation. This emergency measure is a lifeline to safeguard livelihoods, secure critical infrastructure, and restore democratic accountability.”

He expressed confidence that the six-month emergency rule would enable the newly appointed Sole Administrator to stabilize the state, address systemic failures, and mediate conflicts among political factions.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to national stability, Tinubu pledged continued collaboration with the National Assembly to promote peace, economic resilience, and equitable development.

“Today’s decision exemplifies what our nation can achieve when unity of purpose and patriotism guide the actions of leaders,” he stated.

The President urged all stakeholders to support efforts to restore peace in Rivers State and commended Nigerians for their understanding during this critical period.
