President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day period of national mourning in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday.
In a statement released on Sunday, Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over Buhari’s death and announced that all national flags across the country would be flown at half-mast from Sunday through Saturday as a mark of respect for the late leader.
“I have directed that all national flags fly at half-staff across the country for seven days from today,” the President said.
To further honour Buhari’s legacy, President Tinubu has convened an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), scheduled for Tuesday, dedicated solely to paying tribute to the late statesman.
“The federal government will accord President Buhari full state honours befitting his towering contributions to our country,” Tinubu added.
The late president is expected to be laid to rest on Monday in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The Daily Post confirms that Buhari’s death was announced by his former media aides, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmad, in separate posts on X.
In a related development, President Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima to London to coordinate the repatriation of Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.
