Tinubu Brokers Fresh Peace Deal in Rivers: Wike, Fubara, Lawmakers Reunite at Aso Villa

In a renewed move to restore political stability in Rivers State, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has successfully reunited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, and members of the State House of Assembly.

The resolution came following a closed-door meeting held late Thursday night at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where the President met with the aggrieved parties to broker peace.

According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the meeting was a reaffirmation of Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring lasting peace in Rivers State. In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Onanuga stated:

“President Tinubu has demonstrated once again that he wants peace for Rivers State. Just like he brought together the political gladiators to sign a peace deal in December 2023, he repeated the same on Thursday night, three months after he imposed the March 18 state of emergency.”

Those in attendance at the meeting included FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Chike Amaewhule.

Sources close to the talks confirmed to DAILY POST that the parties appeared conciliatory, with visible signs of reconciliation following the Presidential intervention.

“From the body language after the meeting with the President, I can tell you that they (Wike, Fubara, and the lawmakers) have resolved their differences,” the source noted.

The political rift between Wike and Fubara had escalated in recent months, threatening governance and security in the oil-rich state. In March, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers, citing threats to lives and property. Subsequently, he suspended Governor Fubara, his deputy, Dr. Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the House of Assembly, appointing retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas as interim Administrator of the state.

With this latest peace effort, observers hope that Rivers State can now return to political stability and focus on development.
