In response to the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, President Bola Tinubu has directed immediate federal intervention, including the temporary relocation of key ministers to Niger State and the approval of relief materials and reconstruction funding.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited the town on behalf of the President, conveyed Tinubu’s deep condolences to the affected communities.
“The President specifically instructed me to come to Mokwa to commiserate with the people over the tragedy that befell the town. His heart is with the grieving people of Mokwa,” Shettima said.
He further assured residents that the Federal Government, in collaboration with the Niger State Government, would address all concerns raised by the affected communities.
As part of emergency response efforts, President Tinubu has directed the Ministers of Environment and State for Agriculture to temporarily relocate to Niger State to oversee urgent interventions, particularly under the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project, which focuses on flood drainage and environmental challenges.
Additionally, the President approved the donation of 20 truckloads of food items to be distributed among genuine victims of the flood disaster. The distribution process will be carried out in partnership with the village head of Mokwa to ensure fairness and transparency.
Vice President Shettima also commended the swift response by the Niger State Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba, and the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) for their continued support to the victims.
The intervention signals a strong federal commitment to disaster response and long-term environmental resilience in flood-prone communities across Nigeria.
