A minimum of 40,000 homes in Niger State’s Paikoro and Lapai Local Government Areas have lost power as a result of the destruction of Power Distribution Company facilities.
According to the investigation, the incident has occurred three times in the two LGAs in the last six months. 33 transformers in the Lapai LGA were vandalized, and suspected robbers also took the feeder pillars feeding both local government areas in Paiko.
Because of the tragedy, the majority of homes now rely on generators to generate electricity for domestic and other uses.
Alhaji Mohammed Yaro Paiko, a prominent member of the community, appealed to the state government and the electricity provider to “rescue us from this undeserved situation,” noting that “most of our businesses are now grounded.”
Paiko claimed that “men of the underworld are now seizing the opportunity to invade our homes, especially at night.”
Alhaji Mohammed Adamu, the electricity company’s public relations representative in Minna, confirmed the event when contacted, stating that “our installations are frequently vandalized.”
“The installations had been stolen three times prior,” according to Adamu. “We went there and replaced them to offer the people power, only for this current occurrence to happen. Where do we get money to continue these installations?”
