Fear and grief have engulfed Waje community in Danko-Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State following a deadly attack by suspected bandits that claimed the lives of 15 farmers and left three others injured on Saturday.
The tragic incident has triggered a mass displacement, with dozens of terrified residents — mostly women and children — fleeing to the nearby town of Zuru in search of safety.
Speaking to Daily Post, Alhaji Musa Waje, a resident who lost his younger brother in the attack, described the atmosphere as one of intense fear and uncertainty.
“No one feels safe anymore. People are leaving because we don’t know if the attackers will return,” he said.
Another displaced victim, Aisha Bala, whose husband was among the slain, shared her emotional trauma.
“We barely escaped with our lives. I can’t sleep at night, and I don’t want my children to grow up in fear,” she tearfully explained.
Residents are calling for urgent intervention from security agencies, citing a lack of adequate security presence in Waje and surrounding areas. Many fear that without a sustained security response, recent visits by government officials and relief efforts may do little to address the persistent danger.
“We need help. We are not armed, and these people are killing us like animals. The government must protect us,” said Malam Shuaibu Danbaba, who lost two relatives in the attack.
Waje community borders Zamfara, Sokoto, and Niger States — regions known for repeated bandit attacks and cross-border criminal activity. Locals believe that porous boundaries and poor surveillance are contributing to the frequency of these deadly raids.
They are now pleading for increased security presence, including patrols and intelligence operations, to prevent further bloodshed and restore hope to a community on the brink.
