A high-level political coalition meeting in Abuja turned chaotic on Sunday, prompting allegations from activist lawyer Deji Adeyanju that President Bola Tinubu is working behind the scenes to sabotage the emerging alliance.
The meeting, convened by the National Political Consultative Group (North), brought together key opposition figures including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
Tensions flared when delegates from Jigawa State disrupted the proceedings, following the announcement of a delegation by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal. The aggrieved delegates stormed the stage, rejecting those selected to speak on their behalf and causing a temporary breakdown in order.
Security operatives swiftly moved to secure Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, and other top personalities as the situation escalated.
Reacting to the incident, Adeyanju took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter), accusing President Tinubu of undermining the coalition’s efforts.
“Tinubu will plant moles around all of them enough to make the coalition never work like it did in 2023,” Adeyanju wrote. “There’s nothing Tinubu hates more than a united opposition. He governed Lagos since 1999 by crushing opposition.”
The coalition aims to present a formidable front ahead of the 2027 general elections, but Sunday’s disruption has cast doubts on the alliance’s cohesion and prospects.
