Fresh tension is mounting in Yakoyo, a community in Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State, as residents and leaders under the Yakoyo Community Development Committee (CDC) have cried out over alleged harassment, intimidation, and threats to life by a former CDC member said to be working with land grabbers.

In an open letter addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, the CDC executives and community stakeholders accused the former member of being a willing tool in the hands of those attempting to illegally take over Yakoyo land — despite an ongoing legal dispute.

The community pointed to a pending court case (Suit No. HCF/200/2022) currently before the Ogun State High Court, warning that the land grabbers were using self-help tactics to intimidate residents and undermine the judicial process.

The letter detailed a recent invasion by armed men that left several community members injured, describing it as one of several attacks allegedly orchestrated to destabilize the area.

“For the second time this year, 2025, we are calling on the IGP and the Ogun State Commissioner of Police to rein in individuals who, through the influence of the said former CDC member, are constantly used to harass, extort, and arrest Yakoyo residents,” the letter read.

The residents further accused the group of attempting to rename Johnson Street, one of the community’s longstanding streets — a move they strongly resisted.

According to the CDC, previous reports made to law enforcement have not yielded any concrete response, with the intimidation campaign persisting unabated.

Despite the challenges, Yakoyo leaders expressed hope that the intervention of the police hierarchy would bring lasting peace and justice to the embattled community.
