There was heightened tension on Saturday morning as angry residents barricaded the Ijebu-Ode–Mojoda–Epe Road in protest against newly introduced tollgate charges by the Ogun State Government.
The demonstrators, who blocked the busy dual carriageway with used tires and wooden planks, brought traffic to a standstill, leaving hundreds of commuters and travelers stranded for hours.
The protest, which began along the Fari Expressway, quickly spread towards Mojoda in Epe, Lagos, severely disrupting vehicular movement across the corridor.
Chanting solidarity songs and wielding placards, the protesters accused the government of imposing exploitative toll charges on already struggling citizens.
A trailer driver who was caught in the gridlock expressed frustration over the situation.
“I paid N3,000 just this morning. How much are we making that they want to collect everything from us?” he said.
Another commercial driver, Mr. Odinaka, joined the demonstration, stating:
“I am supposed to be on the road, but I will stay here and join them to protest. They have to stop embezzling money from the poor citizens of Nigeria who are struggling to survive.”
As of press time, efforts by security agencies and local authorities to disperse the protesters and restore normal traffic flow were ongoing.
