Tension in Abuja as Security Forces Block Roads to Eagles Square Amid Planned Protests

0

Security agencies on Monday morning mounted a heavy blockade of roads leading to Eagles Square and the Federal Secretariat in Abuja, disrupting movement and stranding thousands of workers and commuters.

The action, which began before daybreak, was in response to planned protests by aggrieved Nigerians opposing the controversial cybercrime law and the recent declaration of emergency rule in Rivers State.

Riot police strategically stationed patrol vehicles to block all entry points to the protest venue, creating gridlock and confusion in the nation’s capital.

Vanguard observed that commuters and workers heading to offices located near the heavily fortified Eagles Square were forced to abandon their vehicles and trek under tight security surveillance.

Many office workers expressed frustration as they were turned back or delayed, with some spending hours trying to navigate alternate routes amid the lockdown. The bottleneck quickly escalated into a traffic crisis across adjoining routes, as hundreds of vehicles became trapped.

Security operatives on ground declined to provide official reasons for the blockade or to comment on the disruption caused to civilian movement on a workday.

As of press time, the protest had yet to commence, and no official statement had been issued by the police or federal authorities regarding the operation.
