The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that Sokoto and Kebbi States are currently receiving only between 6 and 7 megawatts (MW) of bulk electricity following the collapse of three transmission towers on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi line.
According to a statement released on Saturday by TCN’s General Manager of Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the limited supply is being routed through the Mando Transmission Substation via the 132kV Mando–Zaria–Funtua–Gusau–Talata Mafara–Sokoto–Birnin Kebbi line, as an emergency measure to cushion the impact of the blackout in the region.
The three towers reportedly collapsed on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, after a severe windstorm hit the area, disrupting electricity supply in parts of the Northwest.
In response, TCN said it has mobilised three separate contractors to begin immediate reconstruction of the damaged towers. Each contractor has been assigned one tower, a strategy the company says will fast-track the restoration process and reduce the outage duration.
“Efforts have been made to cushion the impact of the disruption in bulk power supply to Kaduna DisCo, which affects some of its customers,” the statement read. “Sokoto and Birnin Kebbi are currently receiving between 6 MW and 7 MW of bulk electricity from the Mando Transmission Substation.”
The company reassured residents that restoration work is ongoing and that normal power supply will be reestablished as quickly as possible.
