The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has debunked reports of a system collapse in 2024, attributing recent power outages to line tripping.
In a statement released on Saturday via its official X handle, TCN clarified that the nation’s power grid has remained stable this year despite recent disruptions.
The company explained that the outage recorded on February 12 was due to the tripping of the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV transmission line, which coincided with a scheduled outage of the Benin–Egbin 330kV line for mechanical line tracing.
“The tripping resulted in a cascaded outage, causing loss of supply within the Abuja, Lagos, and Osogbo axis, while other parts of the country remained unaffected,” the statement read.
TCN assured that full restoration of bulk power supply to the affected areas had since been completed.
The company also emphasized that information regarding grid events and status is exclusively provided by the National Control Centre System Operator or its designated backup, the National Supplementary Control Centre (SNCC), in line with industry regulations governed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC).
The clarification follows the recent restoration of power to several parts of the country after a blackout was reported last Wednesday.
