Students of Taraba State University (TSU), Jalingo, have expressed growing frustration over an ongoing dispute between the state government, university management, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), which has led to an indefinite strike.
The strike has disrupted academic activities, including the suspension of examinations, leaving students stranded and uncertain about the resumption of studies. Many students were seen vacating the campus, with no clear indication of when normalcy would return.
Dr. Garba Joshua, Chairperson of ASUU-TSU, stated that the industrial action was initiated following the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued to the state government and university management to address critical welfare issues affecting lecturers.
“The grievances include the absence of a pension scheme, non-payment of salary arrears, failure to constitute a Governing Council, non-payment of Earned Academic Allowances, exclusion from minimum wage implementation, and inadequate funding as mandated by the University’s founding law,” Dr. Joshua explained.
He emphasized that despite multiple efforts by ASUU-TSU to engage with the government, the lack of tangible commitment necessitated the strike. “This decision is in defense of our members’ welfare, the integrity of the institution, and the future of higher education in Taraba State,” he added.
As of now, there is no resolution in sight, leaving students and staff in limbo over the resumptio
