Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has pledged to continue defending the interests of the people despite the ongoing political turmoil that led to the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu last week.
Governor Fubara made this commitment while receiving Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic-based groups, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, at his private residence in Port Harcourt during an Eid-el-Fitr Sallah visit. He reassured residents that the crisis would ultimately strengthen the state rather than weaken it.
“Their goal is to create problems and deny people their means of livelihood. We will not allow that. We will continue to operate peacefully, respect constituted authority, and ensure that our state remains a model for others in Nigeria,” Fubara stated.
He urged his supporters to maintain faith in God’s process, emphasizing that the ongoing challenges would serve a greater purpose. Reflecting on the season of love, sharing, and sacrifice, the governor acknowledged the Muslim community’s solidarity and prayers during the crisis.
“This season is one of love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made a great sacrifice through your prayers. As Christians, we believe that everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe that this situation is leading us toward a greater purpose,” he affirmed.
Fubara also encouraged patience, drawing an analogy from religious history: “If God could be patient with Noah to allow even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains an essential virtue in our struggle.”
He further condemned efforts to destabilize Rivers State, cautioning his supporters against provocation and urging them to uphold peace and steadfastness.
Speaking on behalf of the Muslim Ummah, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor declared their unwavering support for Governor Fubara, commending his inclusive governance style and recognition of the Islamic faith. He criticized the previous administration for declaring Rivers a 100% Christian state and praised Fubara for fostering inclusivity.
Uhor urged President Tinubu to reconsider the state of emergency and restore Fubara’s full authority, noting that the governor had remained effective despite the crisis.
Fubara concluded by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to justice, equality, and inclusive governance, promising to strengthen interfaith relations once the crisis subsides.
