Supreme Court Upholds Okpebholo’s Victory as Edo State Governor, Dismisses PDP Appeal

The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, putting an end to legal disputes over the September 21, 2024, governorship election.

In a unanimous judgment delivered on Thursday, a five-member panel of justices, led by Justice Mohammed Garba, dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asuerinme Ighodalo, for lacking merit.

The apex court ruled that there was no basis to upturn the decisions of both the Court of Appeal and the Edo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal, which had earlier upheld Okpebholo’s victory under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The justices held that the PDP and its candidate failed to provide credible and admissible evidence to substantiate claims of electoral malpractice, including allegations of over-voting and substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
