Former Senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has called on Northern Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections, citing visible progress under his administration compared to previous Northern-led governments.
Speaking during an interview with journalists in Kaduna on Monday, Sani commended the Tinubu administration for what he described as significant strides, urging Northerners not to be swayed by individuals with selfish interests.
“For those of us from this part of the country, we appreciate the progress made so far by this present government,” Sani said. “Those who had the opportunity to do better in the past and failed should be offering apologies to the people of the North, not inciting them.”
He further warned against manipulation by political actors who, according to him, had the chance to transform the region but instead left it in worse condition.
“The North should not be incited against a government that is doing far better than the one that came from our region. We must remember that President Tinubu supported our own for eight years — it’s only right to support him now that he is in office,” he added.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s turbulent history, Sani emphasized the importance of learning from the past to avoid repeating past mistakes. He cautioned against inflammatory rhetoric, noting that many of the loudest critics were motivated by personal loss of influence, not genuine concern for the people.
“Some of these voices had the chance to turn the North into a paradise, but left it as hell. Today, they are crying foul not for the masses, but because they’ve been excluded from power,” he said.
While affirming the right of every citizen to express dissent, Sani urged that such expressions be constructive and not detrimental to national unity.
“Nigeria has survived horrible experiences. We cannot afford to let selfish politics push us back,” he concluded.
