Activist and politician Omoyele Sowore has attributed the rising number of premature deaths among Nigerian politicians to the poor governance and policies of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government.
Sowore made this assertion during a consultative meeting held in Abuja between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political parties.
Addressing the gathering, the African Action Congress (AAC) leader highlighted the alarming frequency of bye-elections necessitated by the deaths of over 12 political officeholders across the country in the past year.
Posting on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, Sowore stated, “Today, I participated in a consultative meeting between @inecnigeria and political parties in Abuja, where an unexpected issue emerged concerning the numerous bye-elections held this year due to the deaths of over 12 political office holders across Nigeria.
“During my intervention, I emphasized that these premature deaths are a consequence of the @OfficialAPCNg poor governance and policies.”
Sowore, who was seated near APC Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje and the party’s National Secretary, Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, described their reactions as dismissive, noting that Basiru—his former colleague from their days in the University of Lagos and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS)—appeared amused by his remarks.
“Interestingly, I was seated close to the @APCNigeria Chairman, Gandollar, and their party secretary, ex-Senator Surajudeen Ajibola Basiru, @DrSRJ_. Their responses were quite revealing, as they appeared amused by this correlation. In fact, @DrSRJ_ was screaming from his seat, ‘Sowore, you’ve come again!’ They don’t still get it! #RevolutionNow,” Sowore wrote.
The meeting underscored ongoing political concerns and further fueled Sowore’s advocacy for systemic reforms through his #RevolutionNow campaign.
