The South-South Youths Initiative has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an act of injustice and political bias.
In a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Imeabe Saviour Oscar, the group condemned the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy while allowing Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to remain in office despite his alleged role in the political crisis.
The youth group argued that the decision appeared to favor Wike, a central figure in the conflict, and undermined democratic principles by replacing an elected government with a sole administrator.
The organization urged President Tinubu to adopt a more balanced approach, emphasizing that the crisis is primarily a power struggle between Governor Fubara and Wike, with the Martin Amaewhule-led State House of Assembly allegedly acting under Wike’s influence.
“For the sake of fairness, equity, and justice, we call on President Tinubu to consider suspending the FCT Minister. This would demonstrate impartiality in handling the crisis,” the statement read.
The group also questioned why similar emergency measures were not applied to northern states battling severe security threats from banditry and insurgency.
The South-South Youths Initiative called on the National Assembly to reject the state of emergency, warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for Nigerian democracy.
Despite their concerns, the group appealed for calm and urged Rivers State residents to maintain peace as the situation unfolds. They reaffirmed their commitment to democratic governance and regional development while advocating for justice and fairness in resolving the crisis.
