South East Reps Demand JAMB Registrar’s Resignation Over 2025 UTME Failure

The South East Caucus of the House of Representatives has called for the resignation of the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Professor Ishaq Oloyede, following what it described as a “catastrophic institutional failure” in the conduct of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

In a statement released on Monday by caucus leader, Hon. Igariwey Enwo, the lawmakers condemned the technical glitches that affected nearly 380,000 candidates nationwide—many of whom are now required to resit the exam.

The caucus expressed deep dissatisfaction with JAMB’s handling of the crisis, citing poor communication, scheduling conflicts with ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WAEC), and inadequate notice for the rescheduled tests.

“We are deeply concerned, as all five South Eastern states we represent were directly affected by these so-called ‘score distortions,’” the statement read. “While we acknowledge Professor Oloyede’s openness in admitting JAMB’s failures, the remedial steps taken so far fall drastically short of our constituents’ expectations.”

The lawmakers described JAMB’s response as reactive and insufficient, noting that students currently writing their WAEC exams were given less than 48 hours’ notice to appear for the rescheduled UTME—an arrangement that led to low turnout and exam clashes.

They called for the immediate cancellation of the 2025 UTME and the scheduling of a new date after the conclusion of both WAEC and NECO examinations to ensure no student is unfairly disadvantaged.

The caucus also demanded the suspension of officials responsible for JAMB’s digital operations and logistics, emphasizing that accountability must extend beyond public apologies.

“Professor Oloyede’s resignation would pave the way for an independent and thorough review of this failure, and help restore public trust in JAMB’s integrity and competence,” the statement concluded.
