A socio-political group in the South-East has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what it described as unprecedented appointments of sons and daughters of the region into key national positions, while urging him to take bold steps toward creating new states and implementing critical economic reforms.
The commendation and appeal were made in a communiqué issued after the inauguration of the group in Nsukka, Enugu State. The document was signed by Hon. Humphrey Nsofor (National Coordinator), Prof. Damian Opata (Deputy National Coordinator), Prof. Chuka Ezema (Coordinator, Strategy, Enugu North Senatorial District), and Dr. Anthony Alumona (Coordinator, Administration).
The group acknowledged that under President Tinubu’s leadership, the South-East — particularly the Nsukka zone — had received significant appointments, including:
Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla (Chief of Naval Staff)
Frank Mba (Deputy Inspector General of Police)
Prof. Melvin D. Ayogu (Member, Board of Directors, Central Bank of Nigeria)
Dr. Mrs. Amaka Onu (Board Member, Federal Polytechnic, Jigawa)
Hon. Favour Nkem Asogwa (Board Member, Federal Polytechnic, Nekede)
Chief Eva Asadu (Member, Anambra Imo River Basin Authority)
Major General E.I. Okoro (Military Secretary, Nigerian Army)
Prof. Iliyasu Usman (First Igbo Imam, Central Mosque Abuja)
“These appointments, especially for the people of Enugu North Senatorial District, are historic and deeply appreciated,” the group stated.
However, the group also used the occasion to urge the President to champion an Executive Bill amending the Constitution to allow the creation of new states, describing it as a move that would cement Tinubu’s legacy as the first civilian president under whose leadership states were created.
In addition, the group raised concerns about the biting economic challenges facing Nigerians, appealing to the President to stabilize the naira, reduce inflation and fuel prices, and refine the ongoing subsidy programme to ease hardship.
“There is much hunger in the land,” the communiqué read. “We plead with the President to urgently address the worsening economic conditions.”
On national security, the group proposed the establishment of a Digital Response Unit within the security architecture to combat rising insecurity through modern technological means.
Reaffirming their loyalty to the President, the group pledged support for his re-election bid in 2027, emphasizing that completing the Southern mandate of eight years would reduce political tension and foster national unity.
“We urge all Nigerians to support President Tinubu for a second term,” the group concluded. “May the Almighty God continue to guide your administration in the right direction.”
