Governors, members of the National Assembly, and speakers of the state houses of assembly from the South East emerged from a meeting with Ohanaeze Ndigbo leadership on Monday in Abuja with the decision to see President Bola Tinubu to discuss the security situation in their region.
This is because Francis Nwifuru, the governor of Ebonyi, said that the state did not adhere to the sit-at-home directive.
The South East Governors’ Forum Chairman and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, hosted a meeting at Imo Lodge where important issues impacting Igbo were discussed.
Security is mentioned in the Exclusive Legislative List of the Nigerian Constitution, and the Presidency has the authority to send the military and police to key locations across the nation.
The group decided that the Presidency needed to pay urgent attention to the region’s daily loss of life and property.
Uzodimma revealed in his speech that all Igbo leaders and stakeholders were working together to combat regional insecurity. The South East leaders were going to present the issue to the president, who they believed would provide the required support, even though the Federal Government alone is responsible for security with the help of the governors, according to him.
Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, President-General of Ohanaeze, said the gathering brought Igbo leaders together to strategize about how to maximize Ndigbo’s potential.
According to Iwuanyanwu, the time has come for Ohanaeze Ndigbo and all Igbo to use their God-given gifts to launch an altogether new approach to finding long-term answers to the Igbo problems.
He said: “Igboland is blessed with abundant natural resources and if properly harnessed will benefit the people. We have limestone which is the major raw material for cement production. Therefore, we can establish factories that can supply cement to the whole of Africa.
“Unfortunately, the NIGERCEM cement factory has been moribund because of some unresolved issues. A committee will be set up to liaise with the Governors of Ebonyi and Enugu States to resolve the issues and revive the factory to create employment for the people.”
At the end of the meeting, it was gathered that the Igbo leaders “resolved that a high-powered Igbo delegation would meet the Presidency to discuss the immediate and remote causes as well as the viable solutions to insecurity in the South East.”
