Lagos, Jan. 31 — The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of one soldier and multiple injuries following an accident during its Bi-Annual Route March near Myhoung Barracks, Yaba, Lagos.

The Division stated that the incident occurred when a private vehicle recklessly drove into the marching troops.

In a statement issued on Friday, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 81 Division, Maj.-Gen. Farouk Mijinyawa, expressed his deepest condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased soldier. He also wished the injured personnel a swift recovery.

“The deceased has been deposited in the mortuary, while those injured are receiving medical care at the 68 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Yaba,” Mijinyawa said.

He assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway, with the 81 Division Military Police working alongside other security agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

While urging calm, the GOC reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to its training programs and operational readiness despite the tragedy.

“This tragic loss will not deter the Division’s dedication to safeguarding lives and property within its Area of Responsibility (AoR) in accordance with the Nigerian Army’s constitutional mandate,” he stated.

The Nigerian Army’s route march is a routine exercise designed to enhance the operational preparedness of its formations across Lagos State.
