Sokoto Leads in Wage Implementation, NLC Chairman Refutes NULGE President’s Claim

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Sokoto State, Comrade Aliyu Abdullahi Jangle, has urged the National President of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Alhaji Ali Haruna Kankara, to verify facts before making public statements that may mislead the public.

This comes in response to recent comments by Kankara alleging that Sokoto State is among states yet to commence payment of the new N70,000 minimum wage.

Addressing journalists in Sokoto, Comrade Jangle firmly dismissed the claim, stating that Sokoto State has been paying the new minimum wage to all categories of workers—including local government and LGEA staff—since January 2025.

“Sokoto is, in fact, the first state in the Federation to fully implement the N70,000 minimum wage,” he declared.

The assertion was jointly supported by the Sokoto State Chairman of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Abubakar Gero, who reaffirmed the full implementation of the wage across the board.

Comrade Jangle expressed disappointment over the statement by the NULGE National President, describing it as inaccurate and lacking in proper consultation.

“It is disheartening to see the NULGE National President making statements on matters he clearly does not have accurate information about,” he said, calling for due diligence and proper communication within union leadership before going public with such claims.
