An operative of the Sokoto State Community Guard Corps tragically lost his life due to an accidental discharge shortly after participating in a successful joint operation that rescued 66 kidnap victims in Sokoto State.

The rescue operation, led by the Nigerian Army, was conducted on Monday at Tidibali Forest, located in the eastern part of the state. It is part of ongoing efforts to combat banditry in the region.

Confirming the incident on Wednesday, the Special Adviser to Governor Ahmed Aliyu on Security, Colonel Ahmed Usman (rtd), disclosed that the operative, whose name has been withheld, died at their base shortly after the operation.

“The unfortunate incident occurred when the operative’s gun mistakenly discharged and shot him. Despite immediate efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward,” Colonel Usman stated.

The adviser highlighted the significant achievements of the joint operation, which is sponsored by the Sokoto State Government to curb criminal activities.

“So far, 66 kidnap victims have been successfully rescued, and several bandits neutralized during the operation. The efforts to rid the state of criminal elements, particularly bandits, will continue unabated,” Usman added.

The Sokoto State Community Guard Corps, alongside the Nigerian Army and other security agencies, has been at the forefront of combating banditry and other forms of criminality, bringing much-needed relief to affected communities in the state.
