Simon Ekpa Denies Involvement in South-East Killings, Slams Defamatory Reports

Detained Biafra activist and self-acclaimed Prime Minister of the United States of Biafra (USB), Simon Ekpa, has strongly denied any involvement in recent killings in South-East Nigeria, describing the allegations as false and defamatory.

In a statement issued through his legal representative, Mr. Jonathan Levy, Ekpa condemned a publication by Biafra Radio dated March 27, 2025, which claimed the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) were not responsible for violent incidents in Orsu and other communities in Imo and Anambra states — implicitly pointing fingers at Ekpa and his faction.

Ekpa, who leads the USB alongside his deputy Ngozi Orabueze, stated that the publication contained “false, defamatory, and malicious statements” targeting him and his affiliated group, the Biafra Liberation Army (BLA).

“The article falsely alleges, either directly or by implication, that Mr. Ekpa, the BLA, and by extension, USB, are responsible for murder and other acts of violence in southeastern Nigeria,” the statement read.

“These allegations are patently false, unsubstantiated, and defamatory. Neither Mazi Simon Ekpa, the BLA defence force, nor any affiliated entity or official of the United States of Biafra has been involved in any such acts,” Levy added.

The group maintained that the publication amounted to actionable libel under defamation laws in both the United Kingdom and the United States. It also accused the IPOB media arm, through its spokesperson Emma Powerful, of publishing divisive rhetoric and undermining Biafran unity.

“It is alarming that anyone claiming to represent Biafra would make such treacherous accusations against a fellow Biafran leader currently in detention,” the statement said, suggesting the possibility of infiltration within IPOB’s communication channels.

Ekpa’s camp further warned that the continued circulation of such reports not only poses threats to the safety of USB affiliates but also sabotages the political and diplomatic efforts of the Biafran liberation movement.

They have demanded an immediate retraction of the publication, warning of legal consequences if ignored.

Simon Ekpa, who is currently facing trial in Finland, continues to generate controversy over his role in the South-East Nigeria crisis and the splintering of pro-Biafra advocacy groups.
