The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that Simon Ekpa, a prominent Biafran separatist leader, is now facing terrorism-related charges in Finland.

Ekpa, who was initially arrested by Finnish security authorities in November 2024, was officially charged on Friday after being held in detention for nearly six months.

According to the Finnish National Prosecution Authority, the charges against Ekpa include “public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent” and “participation in the activities of a terrorist group.” These alleged offenses were reportedly committed between 2021 and 2024 in Lahti, a city in southern Finland.

The charges are believed to be connected to Ekpa’s activities in pushing for the secession of Nigeria’s southeastern region to form the independent state of Biafra.

“The charges were filed on Friday morning as scheduled,” the DSS confirmed, citing reports from Finnish authorities.

The Päijät-Häme District Court in Lahti is expected to preside over the case, although a specific hearing date has not yet been announced.

The DSS also revealed that Ekpa is being accused of “spreading separatist propaganda from his home in Lahti,” further linking his activities abroad to growing concerns about separatist movements in Nigeria.
