Showunmi Dismisses Opposition Coalition: “Too Many Presidential Ambitions, No Hope of Survival”

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesperson to Atiku Abubakar, Segun Showunmi, has cast serious doubt on the viability of the newly formed political coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), stating that it holds no promise of survival.

The coalition, comprising several high-profile political figures across the country, was recently unveiled as a united front to challenge President Bola Tinubu’s administration at the next general election.

Among its prominent members are former Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi; former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai; former Senate President, David Mark; former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar; and former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi.

Significantly, Amaechi, Atiku, and Obi have all declared interest in contesting the presidential ticket of the ADC.

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Showunmi—who has recently softened his stance on the Tinubu administration following a meeting with the president—predicted internal discord within the coalition, citing irreconcilable ambitions.

“They will quarrel among themselves over everything,” he said. “Everybody in that coalition suddenly wants to be president at the same time, and they will not be able to agree.”

Showunmi’s remarks highlight the growing skepticism surrounding the sustainability of the coalition, as observers question whether the alliance can withstand the pressures of conflicting political interests.
