“Show Us the Evidence”: Maryam Abacha Denies Late Husband Looting Allegations

Abuja, Nigeria — Maryam Abacha, widow of former military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has strongly refuted longstanding allegations that her late husband looted billions of dollars during his time in office, demanding concrete proof of the claims.

In a recent interview with TVC, Mrs. Abacha questioned the authenticity of the corruption allegations, challenging accusers to provide verifiable evidence.

“Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?” she asked.

The former First Lady also alleged that funds her husband had supposedly secured for the country “vanished” shortly after his death in 1998, insinuating mismanagement by subsequent governments.

“And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that,” she stated.

Mrs. Abacha also pushed back against what she described as persistent attacks on her husband’s legacy, suggesting that ethnic or religious bias may be influencing public opinion.

“Why are you blaming somebody? Is that tribalism or a religious problem? What is the problem with Nigerians?” she queried, urging citizens to embrace truth, love, and national unity.

She criticised the media for perpetuating negative narratives, urging journalists to “educate the people” rather than “bastardise people.”

“People are not that bad. Twenty-seven years ago and you are still talking about Abacha. He must be very powerful and loved by Nigerians. We thank God for that,” she remarked.

Mrs. Abacha also responded to comments about the relative economic stability during her husband’s rule, marked by high foreign reserves and reduced external debt. She reaffirmed her stance that the former leader did not steal from the country.

“So, where did he steal the money from? And because Nigerians are fools, they listen to everything,” she said bluntly.

Concluding her remarks, she called for national healing and mutual respect.

“No one person can make or unmake Nigeria,” she said. “Even the single man on the street is very important. We are all human beings. All these wahala should stop.”
