Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has strongly opposed moves by the United States to deport Venezuelan prisoners to Nigeria, describing the idea as unacceptable.
This comes after Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, revealed during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today that the U.S. government has been pressuring Nigeria and other African nations to receive deportees from Venezuela.
Tuggar made it clear that Nigeria may not be in a position to accept the prisoners, emphasizing that the country must prioritize its own national interests.
Reacting to the development via his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Senator Sani warned that the Nigerian government must not create any avenue for such deportations now or in the future.
“If the U.S. wants to send Nigerian prisoners in U.S. jails back to Nigeria, that is okay and should be accepted,” Sani stated.
“But we don’t want Venezuelan prisoners in our country, and there should be no space for them now or in the future.”
The former lawmaker’s comments reflect growing concerns about the implications of accepting foreign prisoners and the need to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty and security interests.
