A former lawmaker representing Kaduna Central Senatorial District, Shehu Sani, has criticized the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) for enforcing mandatory vehicle insurance, arguing that the decision should be a matter of personal choice.
Sani expressed his concerns in a post on his official X handle on Monday, stating that compelling vehicle owners to obtain insurance is unjust.
“Forcing people to insure their vehicles is wrong. It should be a personal choice if a person wants to insure their vehicle or not. Insurance guys just want to drag people to their offices,” he wrote.
His remarks come in response to the NPF’s recent nationwide enforcement of the third-party vehicle insurance policy. The police have defended the initiative, stating that it is aimed at safeguarding vehicle owners and road users in line with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
The enforcement has sparked public debate, with some supporting the move as a necessary safety measure, while others, like Sani, view it as an imposition on citizens.
