Phrank Shaibu, Special Assistant to former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, has criticized President Bola Tinubu for allegedly misleading Nigerians with questionable economic data.
Shaibu specifically called out the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) for what he described as politically motivated manipulation of unemployment and inflation figures. He questioned how Nigeria’s unemployment rate reportedly dropped from 33.3% to 5% after the NBS rebased its methodology, arguing that such a figure is unrealistic compared to global standards.
Reacting to a post by Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, who highlighted a supposed drop in inflation, Shaibu dismissed the claim, pointing out that essential commodities continue to rise in price. He accused the government of “economic abracadabra,” likening the situation to Sri Lanka’s past economic crisis, which was worsened by misleading financial reports.
Shaibu warned that despite the administration’s optimistic projections, Nigerians are facing worsening poverty, skyrocketing living costs, and eroding investor confidence.
