Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, has called on federal and state governments to prioritize large-scale rice cultivation as a strategic initiative to bolster the naira and reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported rice.

Speaking during a rice distribution event in Ilase-Ijesa, where over 3,000 bags of rice were handed out to various groups across the district’s 10 local government areas, Senator Fadahunsi highlighted the economic and social advantages of scaling up local rice production.

Economic Benefits of Local Production
Addressing attendees, Fadahunsi emphasized that meeting the nation’s rice consumption demands through local production would significantly cut down the foreign exchange spent on imports. This measure, he said, would shield the naira from further depreciation while ensuring the availability of rice at affordable prices.

“How rice became such a staple on the country’s menu is unclear to many, but it is evident that it is sought after by people across all demographics,” Fadahunsi said. “This makes it crucial for the government at all levels to ensure the availability of rice at affordable prices. The foreign exchange going into rice importation annually is staggering.

“If we can produce large quantities locally, it will significantly reduce forex expenditure and, in turn, strengthen the naira. I urge both federal and state governments to act swiftly on this,” he added.

Community Engagement and Economic Relief
The senator’s rice distribution initiative was part of his efforts to alleviate the economic challenges faced by his constituents. Traditional rulers, religious leaders, political figures, and market women were among the beneficiaries, who were tasked with distributing the food items to their respective communities.

During the event, the leadership of market women from the senatorial district paid a courtesy visit to Senator Fadahunsi, expressing gratitude for his consistent support and requesting further assistance to address their needs.

In a statement released by his media adviser, Sam Segun-Progress, the gesture was described as a reflection of the senator’s commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents.

A Call for Collaborative Action
Fadahunsi reaffirmed his dedication to the well-being of his constituents and called on stakeholders at all levels to collaborate in boosting local food production to ensure economic stability.

He concluded his remarks with a message of hope, urging attendees to remain prayerful for Osun State and Nigeria, predicting that better days lie ahead in 2025.

The event saw a large turnout of community members, underscoring the senator’s strong connection with the people of his district.
