As the Nigerian Senate prepares to resume plenary on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, Senate Leader Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) has reaffirmed the upper chamber’s commitment to national cohesion, economic reform, and improved security.

In a statement released Monday, Bamidele outlined key legislative priorities for the weeks ahead, beginning with the continued consideration and possible passage of the Tax Reform Bills, 2024. He described the bills as vital to restructuring Nigeria’s tax system, boosting national revenue, and empowering all tiers of government to deliver development and democratic dividends.

“First on our agenda is the further consideration of the Tax Reform Bills, 2024. Its passage has become imperative to reform the country’s tax regime and shore up the revenue of the federation,” he stated.

On national security, Bamidele expressed concern over rising insecurity in states like Benue, Borno, Katsina, and Plateau, vowing that the Senate would deepen collaboration with security agencies and develop more robust strategies to combat terrorism and restore peace.

“As the foremost democratic institution, we are committed to putting an end to all acts of terrorism across the federation,” he affirmed.

Addressing political tensions—particularly the ongoing crisis in Rivers State—Bamidele said the Senate is ready to work closely with the Executive to resolve socio-political conflicts nationwide, with a view to fostering reconciliation and national stability.

The Senate is also set to screen key presidential nominees, including Mr. Bayo Ojulari as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and members of the proposed South-South Development Commission.

On constitutional matters, Bamidele noted that the Constitution Review Committee, chaired by Deputy Senate President Senator Barau I. Jubrin, would accelerate its efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s federal structure. In addition, the Senate is preparing to commence a review of the Electoral Act, 2022, aimed at improving electoral transparency and credibility.

The Senate Leader further highlighted the urgency of several pending bills across critical sectors, urging committees to convene public hearings to ensure inclusive and participatory lawmaking.

“We must consider these bills expeditiously and provide platforms for the public to contribute meaningfully to our legislative processes,” he added.

The Senate’s agenda signals a renewed push for governance reform, public engagement, and national healing as lawmakers return to the chambers.
