Senate Embarks on Recess, Committees Directed to Intensify Oversight Duties

The Nigerian Senate on Thursday adjourned its plenary sessions, marking the commencement of its annual long recess, which will last until Tuesday, September 23, 2025.

The announcement was made by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, following the adoption of a motion by the Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), during a brief plenary session.

While declaring the recess, Senator Akpabio emphasized that the break should not be mistaken for a complete holiday. He reminded senators of their ongoing responsibility to carry out oversight functions on ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), particularly on projects within their constituencies.

The Senate President further charged all standing and ad hoc committees to utilize the two-month recess to finalize outstanding assignments. He stressed the importance of completing these tasks to facilitate a smoother legislative process upon resumption.

“Each committee is expected to submit a comprehensive report on its oversight activities when the Senate reconvenes in September,” Akpabio stated.

In a related development, Senator Akpabio also called on his colleagues to attend the burial ceremony of the wife of Senator Diket Plang, scheduled for Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
