Senate Declares Edo Central Seat Vacant Following Okpebholo’s Inauguration as Governor

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has officially declared the Edo Central Senatorial seat vacant after Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as Governor of Edo State on November 12, 2024. The move aligns with Section 68(1)(b) of the 1999 Constitution, which mandates the vacancy of a lawmaker’s seat upon assuming another public office.

The declaration followed a formal request by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, who urged Akpabio to notify the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a by-election for the district. INEC is now expected to schedule the election to ensure continued representation for Edo Central in the Senate.

Senator Okpebholo, who won the Edo State gubernatorial election on September 21, 2024, bid farewell to his colleagues, expressing gratitude and promising to serve as an ambassador for the Senate in his new executive role.
