The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche as the Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

The confirmation followed the presentation and consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on Interior, led by Senator Adams Oshiomhole (APC, Edo North), during Tuesday’s plenary session.

Presenting the report, Senator Oshiomhole stated: “That the Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Interior on the confirmation of the nomination of Nwakuche, Sylvester Ndidi, mni, MFR, for appointment as Comptroller-General, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).”

Following the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio charged Nwakuche with the critical task of addressing the persistent issue of jailbreaks in correctional facilities across the country.

“To whom much is given, much is expected. I hope that his appointment will bring an end to jailbreaks,” Akpabio remarked.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had, last week, submitted Nwakuche’s nomination to the Senate for confirmation, in accordance with Section 3(1)(b) of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act, 2019.

In his official correspondence, Tinubu urged the Senate to consider the nomination expeditiously. “While I hope that the Senate will consider this request in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the letter read.

Following its referral to the Senate Committee on Interior, the nomination was reviewed and returned to the Senate floor for final approval, leading to Nwakuche’s confirmation as the new head of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
