The Senate has confirmed Mark Okoye and Professor Abdullahi Shehu Ma’aji as the Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) and North-West Development Commission (NWDC), respectively.
The confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Ad-Hoc Committee on Regional Development Commissions, chaired by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu. According to the report, all nominees displayed exceptional qualifications and competence during the screening process, affirming their ability to lead the commissions effectively.
The process was not without its moments of contention, as some Senators attempted to delay the confirmation by invoking Order 1(b) to allow for further consultations. However, the motion was overruled when the Senate resolved to convene as the Committee of the Whole to consider the report.
Following the deliberations, the Senate approved the nominees for both commissions, including their chairpersons, managing directors, and other board members. This confirmation comes four weeks after President Bola Tinubu submitted a revised list of nominees to the Senate for screening.
The establishment of these commissions aims to drive developmental projects and initiatives across the South-East and North-West regions, addressing unique challenges and fostering regional growth.
