Senate Announces Leadership for Key Committees

The Nigerian Senate has named Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (APC-Abia) and Senator Babangida Hussaini (APC-Jigawa) as chairmen of the Senate Committees on the South-East Development Commission and North-West Development Commission, respectively.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio made the announcements during the resumption of plenary on Tuesday. He also appointed Senator Mohammed Dandutse (APC-Katsina) as Vice Chairman of the North-West Development Commission and Senator Ken Eze (APC-Ebonyi) as Vice Chairman of the South-East Development Commission.

Additionally, Senator Titus Zam (APC-Benue), formerly Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business, was named Chairman of the Committee on the North Central Development Commission.

In other appointments, Senator Abdul Ningi (PDP-Bauchi) was named Chairman of the Committee on Sports Development, while Senator Victor Umeh (LP-Anambra), who previously chaired the Committee on Diaspora, was reassigned as Chairman of the Committee on National Population and Identity.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP-Kogi), formerly Chairperson of the Local Content Committee, was announced as the new Chairperson of the Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs). Meanwhile, Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (APC-Delta) was appointed Chairman of the Committee on Local Content.

Furthermore, Senator Isa Jubril (APC-Kogi) was named Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Rules and Business. Akpabio stated that a new chairman for the Rules and Business Committee, who must be a knowledgeable lawmaker familiar with Senate rules, would be announced in due course.

Following the announcements, the Senate paid tribute to the late Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives, Adewumi Onanuga, who passed away on January 15. Lawmakers observed a minute of silence in her honor before adjourning plenary to Wednesday.
